(1)- SUPERMAN
QUITS NEWSPAPERING -- Clark Kent quits the Daily Planet in Superman #13
(the next comic book) — and he doesn’t go quietly. He resigns, “and rails on
how journalism has given way to entertainment.”
(2)- THE
REASON FOR GRANDMOTHERS -- The helpfulness of grandmothers is the reason
humans don't die in their thirties the way chimpanzees do, new research shows -
and may even explain our bigger brains.
(3)- MECCA/HAJJ
& ARCHITECTURE – The world’s 2nd tallest building towers over Mecca and
it is just a tiny part of a voracious development that has seen historic sites
bulldozed and locals forced into shantytowns.
(4)- BULLYING
-- The appetite to bully cannot be treated as a social sickness, orthe product
of maladaptive psychological development — which is how it is universally
depicted in the media. Bullying is in our genes.
(5)- ARAB LITERATURE CONTROVERSY --
There’s been a controversy surrounding the Arab Novel Prize in Paris.
This year the jury selected the Algerian writer Boualem Sansal and his novel
Rue Darwin, but…
(6)- A NEW BIO -- Born Norma Jeane
Mortensen, father absent, mother institutionalized on and off as a paranoid
schizophrenic, multiple foster homes; a spell in a Los Angeles orphanage,
before being married at 16.
(7)- FINE FOOD -- What on earth could justify spending so much money on an
exquisite, luxurious meal. It’s ultimately just fuel for humans… in a world
where almost one billion people still go hungry every day?
(8)- ABOUT THAT ART HEIST -- In every great crime there is a clue. And
the clue is often the element that doesn't fit. In this case, the thing that
doesn't fit is the painting by Meyer de Haan. It makes you … think.
(9)- NOT SEEN -- Most urban streams and creeks are hidden in huge sewer
tunnels under streets and expressways, in concrete ditches behind razor-wire
fences, and sometimes even in pipes under the manicured lawns and gardens of
city parks.
