(1)- DENDROCHRONOLOGY – It’s the study of tree rings. It takes its
name from the Greek words dendron, meaning 'tree limb' and khronos, meaning
‘time’. It is a young discipline, an offshoot of astronomy…
(2)- THE STANDOFF -- As war agitation intensifies over Iran’s
nuclear program, the world’s attention focuses on the three men: Iranian President
Ahmadinejad, Israeli’s Netanyahu, and President Barack Obama.
(3)- RETHINKING THE USSR & AFGHANISTAN -- Conventional wisdom states the Union of
Soviet Socialist Republics was defeated in Afghanistan and forced to withdraw
in ignominy. Here’s another way of looking at it.
(4)- MARVEL VERSUS DC – In the 60s, Marvel was scrappier, with a
faster-growing fan base. Marvel was more Mets than Yankees, more Rolling Stones
than Pat Boone; the Pepsi Generation challenger to DC's Coca-Cola giant.
(5)- SARTRE -- Through Marxism, Sartre wanted to create free human beings
with political coercion. Those choosing to live otherwise continue to live
under false structures.
(6)- POETRY – Poetry Magazine Editors Christian Wiman and Don Share go
inside the pages of Poetry, talking to poets and critics, debating the issues,
and sharing their poem selections with listeners.
(7)- THE DISASTER BUSINESS -- Whether it's hurricanes, thunderstorms or
tornadoes, extreme weather is big business. Now a German re-insurer claims
man-made climate change is causing more weather catastrophes…
(8)- EPSTEIN -- His agreeably approachable and fluid prose no doubt is the
result of invisible but careful labor, his opinions are tart and confidently
expressed, he seems to have read just about everything…
(9)- HOW CAN QUANTUM MECHANICS SAY ANYTHING ABOUT
THE MIND? -- Isn’t it about
things that can be physically measured, such as particles and forces? It is; but while minds cannot be measured, it
is ultimately minds that do the measuring.
