(1)- RAISING
PRODOGIES -- Prodigies are able to function at an advanced adult level in
some domain before age 12. “Prodigy” derives from the Latin “prodigium,” a
monster that violates the natural order.
(2)- HOW
HOLLYWOOD MURDERED MOVIES -- For years, the tastes of young audiences have
wielded an influence on what gets made way out of proportion to their numbers
in the population. We now have the result:
(3)- EARLY TIMES --
Archaeologists in Bulgaria say uncover the oldest prehistoric town found to
date in Europe. The town (a salt center) was home to some 350 people and dates
back to between 4700 and 4200 BC.
(4)- POPULATION
-- You may have heard it said there are more people alive than have dies in all
of human history. Not so. About 107 billion people have been born up until now.
And only 100 billion of them are dead.
(5)- THE
CASE FOR PRICE GOUGING -- Democratic and Republican pols warn against sharp
price hikes by merchants after Hurricane Sandy. They may have meant well but,
says Yglesias, what they did is counterproductive.
(6)- FIGURING
IT OUT -- Creationism flies in the face of scientific evidence (all those
fossils!), and imaginative legerdemain is needed to re-interpret the evidence
so as to fit the religious presuppositions.
(7)- AMONG
THE EMPORERS -- Join National Geographic photographer Paul Nicklen as he
captures unique video of emperor penguins soaring through the sea and launching
their bodies out of the water onto the ice.
(8)- BOOK -- The U.S.
Army only seems impressive. Yes, it’s got plenty of tactically competent and
physically heroic enlisted soldiers and low-ranking officers. But its generals
are, on the whole, crappy…
(9)- OF
HENRY JAMES -- Reflecting on James’s
eminence, it was written that he had “always been a writer’s writer,” “a
biographer’s writer” and “a critic’s writer.” He had technical skill, dedication
to his art and intriguing enigmas for his character and personal relationships.
