WEB BOHEMIAN (Tuesday, August 14, 2012)

(1)- LENNY BRUCE EVERYWHERE -- Acknowledging the comic’s gift to Zappa, Mailer, Roth, and the other macho titans of eccentric 1960s pop. Lenny is everywhere, like a trail dropped out of a fertilizer truck.

(2)- DESTROYING PAINTINGS TO SAVE ART -- Manfredi’s protest resonates across Europe. Artists in the U.K., Germany, Hungary, and northern Italy are burning their works and sending him videos in solidarity.

(3)- WHY PARTITION – The British Empire bequeathed many partitions: Ireland, Palestine, India, Cyprus. But though colonial principles of divide and rule played a role in each, the cases were not the same.

(4)- ASSESSING OUR SELVES/TECH -- Man is by nature a technological animal; to be human is to be technological.... When we speak of technology, this is another way of speaking about man himself in one of his manifestation.

(5)- SLEEP -- It is easy to see why philosophers generally avoid talking about sleep. Those who see the aim of philosophy as cultivating the most unpeeled mode of wakefulness are likely to treat sleep as an enemy.

(7) BENCH STUFF -- A Brooklyn man believes he’s sitting on a gold mine. Now comes US Patent #6299251 — a foldable park bench. Sebert Harper aims to plant his invention in parks and subway stations across the city.

(8)- TACO -- As the binational foodie wars wage (who invented what and when, and why) the curious eater is blessed with two new books about the rise of the taco as the international rock star of consumables.

(9)- CALVIN TRILLIN WROTE -- Before we get onto the question of whether experienced wine drinkers can actually tell the difference between red wine and white, I should probably tell you a little something about my background in the field.
