(1)- COULD BE HABITABLE -- Scientists confirm with computer models Gliese 581d, a planet orbiting a red dwarf star about 20 light years from here, has a stable atmosphere, comfortable temperatures, and a surface covered in liquid water.
(2)- GOLD MINING IS UP -- Wind farms and solar installations get most of the attention these days, but the run-up in gold and silver prices over the last year has led mining to reopen this mine in the California Mojave desert.
(3)- RED CHINA REDUX -- Before the Communist Party's 90th birthday, people are singing in homage. The 'red song' campaign began in Chongqing, launched by an ambitious party figure. Some see shades of the Cultural Revolution.
(4)- MICHEL de MONTAIGNE -- Montaigne stretched skyward revising his beliefs, for he was a man forever revisiting his assumptions and deductions, testing them, adding to them. This was the way in which his famous Essays came to be.
(5)- HARVARD -- “A Yale man washes his hands after he goes to the bathroom—a Harvard man washes them before.” The saying makes Yale represent normal male humanity in contrast to a studied, self-conscious few.
(6)- HYBRID POSSUM HELPS -- Australian researchers have successfully bred two genetically distinct Mountain Pygmy-possums, playing a major role in preventing the endangered population in the Victorian Alpine region from further decline.
(7)- WHAT’S AN INTERN? – Definitions of what is an internship vary. Are interns trainees, temps, apprentices, servants? Since the rules are vague or at least unenforced, employers simply fill in the blank with whatever tasks need doing.
(8)- WHY NOT? -- A small research arm of the U.S. intelligence establishment wants to understand how speakers of Farsi, Russian, English, and Spanish see the world by computationally evaluating it through their use of metaphors.
(9)- INSIDE AL JAZEERA -- Nothing prepared us for what we saw happening across the Arab world this year. One network knew damn well how to report a revolution. Michael Paterniti takes us behind the cameras at Al Jazeera.
