WEB BOHEMIAN Weekend Edition (Saturday/Sunday, April 24-25, 2010)
(1)- NO HELP -- A suicidal man connected to a Samaritans-style helpline in Sweden was left pondering his options when the priest at the other end fell asleep and started snoring down the line.
(2)- MILITARY POLITICS -- An exclusive survey of some 1,800 active-duty troops shows the percentage of self-identified Republicans has decreased by one-third since 2004, from 60 percent to 41 percent. Registered Independents in the military, however, have nearly doubled to 32 percent.
(3)- WORMHOLE -- White holes (or call them wormholes) are theoretically possible. If you have a black hole in one region of space, it could, in principle, be connected on the other end (in a separate region) to a white hole!
(4)- NOTHING; NADA -- Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is an international research program with a multimillion-dollar budget. After five decades of listening all the astronomers have to show is an eerie silence.
(5)- MICROSOFT WINS -- Anyone who writes anything negative about Linux has felt the wrath of Linux true believers. But now it appears that the Linux fans have turned to internal warfare, and the biggest winner will be Microsoft.
(6)- CHINESE CANCER CURE -- Scientists in China have demonstrated how arsenic -- a favorite murder weapon in the Middle Ages -- destroys deadly blood cancer by targeting and killing specific proteins that keep the cancer alive.
(7)- SUREFIRE TEST -- Researchers are studying a way to determine from a person's blood how much alcohol he or she regularly drinks. They also worry about the test might be used.
(8)- POETIC THOUGHTS -- In American poetry, it is not Milton but Whitman who dominates those in his wake—or provides the most useful beginning to many poetic "conversations." His free-flowing verse has been incalculably influential.
(9)- MAG REPORT -- Magazines change or die; they are very rarely long-lived. Time and The New Yorker are among the exceptions, not only for lasting but also for not changing as much as most long-running magazines have.
