WEB BOHEMIAN
Weekend Edition (Saturday/Sunday, November 17-18, 2012)
(1)- THE LAST ONE -- Nearly a decade ago, Wiesenthal said
there were no more Nazis to be prosecuted. Today, his indefatigable successor
is still on the hunt — but with Holocaust criminals dying out, how long can…
(2)- COMPETITIVE EATING -- In recent years, the "sport" of
competitive eating has expanded from a Coney Island freak show into an
international, well, freak show. The only question that really matters: Why?
(3)- CATASTROPHISM -- If pseudosciences are not scientific,
neither are they anti-scientific. They flatter science by elaborate rituals of
imitation, rejecting many of the facts, theories and presumptions…
(4)- ARCHITECTUAL PROHIBITIONS -- Some 12 percent of the earth’s surface is
now barred from new construction because of various restrictive
regulations—historic preservation, land conservation, and…
(5)- MORMANISM & CAPITALISM -- The assumption behind much of the “Mormon
moment” chatter is that Mormons are especially suited for success in the brave
new world of unregulated capital: tanned, rested, and ready.
(6)- SOLITUDE -- Even if contemplative solitude gives one a glimpse of the
sublime, questions arise immediately afterwards. What now? What is the purpose
of this solitude? Whom does it serve?
(7)- BOOK PIRACY -- In the U.S., book piracy is a growing problem. But Russia,
there’s a remarkably mature black market for literature—particularly for
ebooks, no doubt in part because the overhead is so low.
(8)- WOLFE -- I am old enough to remember when Thomas Wolfe seemed secure
in the pantheon of 20th-century American writers, the equal, nearly, of
Faulkner and Fitzgerald and Hemingway. He’s now gone from the pantheon.
(9)- YOUNGER ROYAL BROTHERS -- By historical standards the media verdict
on the recent naked antics of Prince Harry was quite tame. There was no attempt
to make political weather out of his behavior nor any serious dent to royal
reputation.
