(1)- THE EMOTICON -- Any email or tweet that feels the need to
signal a wry or facetious remark with one makes my heart sink. It’s a
redundancy, a clumsiness—the equivalent of the office bore laughing at his own
jokes.
(2)- SPAIN’S ROBIN HOOD -- Working within Andalusia’s impoverished
farming communities, a ragtag pair of longtime union leaders have been leading
raids on local supermarkets.
(3)- NOT THE SWEDISH SERIAL KILLER -- In the 1990s, he confessed to more than
30 murders, making him Sweden's most notorious serial killer. Then, he changed
his name and revealed his confessions were all faked.
(4)- MILITARY MEDIOCRITY -- Looking back on the troubled wars in
Afghanistan and Iraq, many observers are content to lay blame on the Bush
administration. But there was also inept leadership by American generals.
(5)- ISLAND -- Matinicus is one of a necklace of islands, more than 3,000
in all, spread out along the Maine coast. A century ago, 200 or more were
fishermen's communities; today, only 14 are inhabited year-round.
(6)- FOOL ME ONCE -- Authorities in Florida said a 49-year-old
homeless man allegedly cheated Disney out of more than $18,000 by using the
same credit card scam at least 26 times.
(7)- THE REAL DEAL -- Dorothy’s blue gingham dress and white
blouse from “The Wizard of Oz” is a Halloween costume favorite, and now, if you
have a cool half a million dollars to spare, you could buy the real deal.
(8)- DEAD CELEBRITY EARNERS -- Fans can’t get enough of Michael Jackson
and Elizabeth Taylor. The late longtime friends took the two top spots on
Forbes' top-earning dead celebrities list. Others include Elvis Presley.
(9)- NO TRUTH ALLOWED – In 1998, a renowned British biochemist who
exposed how genetically-modified organisms can cause organ damage, reproductive
failure, ipaired immunity etc was fired.
