(1)- GEORGE STEINER -- In spite of his reputation as a
"mandarin," comes across in his writing as a brilliant student—the
kind who raises a hand and asks the question no one else has thought of, much
less can answer.
(2)- LUCAS -- Only one cultural figure had the pioneering boldness and
world impact that we associate with the early masters of avant-garde modernism.
George Lucas closed the gap between art and technology.
(3)- ABOUT JESUS -- Jesus has been redefined many times for this or that
ideological purpose—as nationalist symbol, as a successful capitalist salesman,
as a sort of premature Che Guevara, and …
(4)- THE NEXT PANDEMIC -- About 60 percent of human infectious diseases
are animal infections that spill into people. For the most part, they result
from infection by one of six types of pathogen: viruses, bacteria, fungi,
protists, prions, and worms. The most troublesome are viruses.
(5)- FUTURE FROZEN IN TIME -- Science fiction; futurism miss an
important piece of how the future actually turns into the present. They fail to
capture the way we don’t seem to notice when future actually arrives.
(6)- SLEEP WOES -- We don’t know why we can’t sleep, it’s in part because we
don’t really know why we need to sleep in the first place. We know we miss it
if we don’t have it. And we know … sleep conquers us in the end.
(7)- THERE’S A “SMELL” ART SHOW OPENING IN NYC – It showcases vials of the artist’s
scientifically extracted hair oils, sweat and tears. Also, a Scent Chamber
blasts visitors with clouds of perfume and other odors.
(8)- OBAMA -- His seeming ease belies the anxiety and emotion advisers say
he brings to his historic position: pride in what he’s accomplished,
determination to acquit himself well and intense frustration.
(9)- ESPIONAGE CHANGED -- The uncomfortable fact is we don’t know
the motivations behind the administration’s war on whistleblowers, any more
than Americans knew why a wartime “Espionage Act” seemed to have much more to
do with antiwar journalists and speakers than German spies.
