(1)- CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY -- The German phrase “Leck mich am Arsch,” the equivalent of “kiss my ass,” has been officially ruled an insult by a court in Kaiserslautern. German law criminalizes speech considered insulting or hateful.

(2)- WOMEN USED TO RULE -- Even back in prehistoric times, the female of the species was very much the boss. A study has found evidence of ‘alpha cavewomen’ roaming the plains and calling the shots while the menfolk slobbed at home.

(4)- ART AND TELLING LIES -- If art is a kind of lying, then lying is a form of art, albeit of a lower order—as Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain have observed. Both liars and artists refuse to accept the tyranny of reality.

(5)- WHY TRAVEL -- Some believe technology has hijacked the entire visitable earth, snatched it away, miniaturised and simplified it, making travel so accessible on a flickering computer screen that there is no need to go anywhere.

(6)- BLAMING THE WEALTHY -- Since 1848, the most damning adjective among intellectuals from the radical left through the romantic right has been “bourgeois.” Deirdre McCloskey claims such contempt is mistaken and dangerous.

(7)- FRENEMIES? -- Philo-Semitism sounds like it would have been the rallying-cry of the opponents of anti-Semitism. However, “philo-Semitism” was invented as a term of abuse, applied by anti-Semites to those who opposed them.

(8)- PRIVATE MARKET VALUE -- The logic of the social media market: Have an idea, expand quickly, and monetarize it before imitators arrive. Investments and values reach unprecedented heights. All ingredients for an unwanted bubble.

(9)- A VIEW OF COLLEGE -- Society wants to identify intelligent people early on to funnel them into careers that maximize their talents. College is a process that is sufficiently multifaceted and fine-grained to do this.
