(1)- ROLLS SECRET -- Exactly a century ago, the 6in sculpture that would become known the world over as the Spirit of Ecstasy appeared for the first time on the bonnet of a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. It is the custodian of a tragic secret.
(2)- PEAT – It’s partially decomposed vegetable matter that forms in bogs and moors. Not very appetizing. Still, it is one of the most clearly identifiable flavors in Scotch whisky. And when dried, it is fuel for the malting process.
(3)- WHALE TALK -- Sperm whales use accents to identify themselves to others in their extended family group. The accents are specific to one call, or "coda," used by whales worldwide, enabling them to recognize strangers from any region.
(4)- NOT ENOUGH -- Amid concern that Americans in the U.S. consume inadequate amounts of iodine, scientists find 53 percent of iodized salt samples contained less than the FDA recommended level of this key nutrient.
(5)- HEGEL AND THE FRONTIER -- In what turned out to be one of the oddest episodes in the history of American thought, a group of men known as the St. Louis Hegelians declared that the direction of history led to eastern Missouri.
(6)- GK CHESTERTON – He was among the giants of early 20th-century literature. If that sounds peculiar then it accurately captures a character who often gave the impression of having wandered into real life by mistake.
(7)- NOTHING TO HIDE? -- Everybody probably has something to hide from somebody. As Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn declared, "Everyone is guilty of something or has something to conceal. All one has to do is look hard enough to find what it is."
(8)- WHY DO ANIMALS PLAY? -- In quiet desperation, play researchers have come up with more than two dozen possible benefits of play among animals but, in spite of four decades of effort, they’ve found conclusive evidence for none.
(9)- ROGER AILES’ DILEMMA -- The circus Roger Ailes created at Fox News made his network $900 million last year. But it may have lost him something more important: the next election.
