(1)- ABOUT COLLINGWOOD – Robin George Collingwood was certainly English enough, and even philosophers and historians can display kinds of courage, but I am not sure he would have worn those other epithets with quite such comfort.
(2)- GOOGLE GROWS -- Google grew its revenue and profit in its first fiscal quarter, exceeding Wall Street expectations and prompting the Internet company to express a commitment for "heavy investment" in its core and newer businesses.
(3)- PARIS – Graham Robb wrote a superb book about France two years ago, The Discovery of France, and now follows up with an ingenious study of Paris since 1750. Surprisingly, Paris is the more tumultuous and unbounded subject.
(4)- SPECIAL GUY -- Grisha Perelman proved the PoincarĂ© Conjecture, one of mathematics’ most important and intractable problems, in 2002—almost a century after it was first posed, and won $1 million for its solution.
(5)- A VIEW – Prosecuting His Holiness for his complicity in the Catholic Church’s sex scandals is a terrible idea, writes Tunku Varadarajan. Pope Benedict can solve the church’s problems himself.
(6)- MIND POWER ATTACK THREAT -- Singapore police question a man who threatened to bring down a Qantas flight from Sydney to Singapore. The man was restrained by flight stewards after he made threats to disrupt QF31 using mind power.
(7)- PHYSICIAN CERTIFICATION -- Medical certifications are expiring. For the first time since leaving medical school, many doctors must take tests to renew board certification in their fields -- 147 specialties from dermatology to obstetrics.
(8)- HEALTH INSURANCE IRONY -- A new study finds that companies selling health and life insurance invest nearly $2 billion in fast food restaurants, Scientific American reports.
(9)- GREAT STORY -- During World War II, desert explorer Laszlo Almasy smuggled Nazi agents through the Sahara on an epic journey behind enemy lines. Now the true story of the man depicted in "The English Patient," is coming to light.
