WEB BOHEMIAN Weekend Edition (Saturday/Sunday, March 13-14, 2010)
(1)- RAINBOW TROUT -- An angler can catch a lot of rainbow trout and yet have no clue what a remarkable force of nature the creatures truly are. A Colorado research associate hoists them up for close inspection in a book.
(2)- CULTURAL EVOLVING -- As with any other species, human populations are shaped by the usual forces of natural selection, like famine, disease or climate. A new force is now coming into focus. It is one with a surprising implication.
(3)- THE FUTURE OF CRITICISM -- Does arts criticism have a future? An exclusive essay to mark the launch of our search for young music critics. These days the critic is an endangered species, almost a write-off.
(4)- RABBIT -- American rabbit is typically raised on smaller farms, not in some giant industrial rabbit complex. The meat is lean and healthy, and makes an interesting break from chicken.
(5)- NOT GOOD -- Underground methane seeps through the Arctic Ocean floor and into the Earth's atmosphere, thanks to a weakening of the protective layer of permafrost at the ocean's bottom. Once released, methane wreaks havoc with the climate.
(6)- WHY PROCRASTINATE? -- let's take a look at why we procrastinate so we have a better chance of overcoming it. There are several schools of thought on procrastination, including that it's hard-wired into our brains.
(7)- CONSIDER THIS -- the theory that praise, self-esteem and accomplishment increase in tandem is false. Children incessantly praised for their intelligence (often by parents praising themselves) often underrate the importance of effort.
(8)- AGE STUDY -- A new study says people who feel older than their chronological age will experience a range of downsides. But people with a younger outlook on life do escape many of the physical problems associated with old age.
(9)- IRONY ABOUNDS -- A 45-year-old woman, charged with ending a domestic dispute by killing her 26-year-old husband of five days, is a registered lobbyist for a group fighting domestic violence.
