WEB BOHEMIAN (Friday February 12, 2010)
(1)- EUROPE AND ISLAM -- Europe’s anti-Islam sentiment may be expressed most visibly in memoirs because Europeans have been reticent to condemn Islam—or religion more generally—outright. Americans, however, seem to prefer a less subtle approach.

(2)- THE LAST NEANDERTHALS -- The last Neanderthals in Europe died out at least 37,000 years ago - and both climate change and interaction with modern humans could be involved in their demise, says new research from the University of Bristol.

(3)- STONE AGE MIND – A psychology professor who studies the evolution of memory at Purdue finds that people better remember items from a list when they put themselves in the place of prehistoric humans, and imagine how items might help them survive.

(4)- THE BEAUTY THING -- The new normal: a generation that primps and dyes and pulls and shapes, younger and with more vigor. Girls today are salon vets before they enter elementary school.

(5)- QUITTING THE U.S. -- Obama may have reassured Americans that the state of the Union is "strong," but a group of Vermont secessionists declares their race for political power to get their state to quit the Union altogether.

(6)- ORGIN OF KILROY -- Whatever its origin, the phrase was destined to be found chalked in places no graffiti-artist could reach, thereby feeding the myth. If Kilroy could leave his mark in difficult places, where else could he go?

(7)- NOTICED – I noticed the shoes first. They were fluorescent white, just out of a shoebox, just out of Wal-Mart. The old man wore khaki pants and a plaid shirt under a light jacket. A faded red Farm Supply baseball cap sat on his head.

(8)- AFRICAN PRESIDENT -- The South African president, Jacob Zuma, is reported to have has fathered a 20th child with the daughter of a friend. He is a proud Zulu traditionalist and is married to a third current wife and fifth overall.

(9)- COST OF SIN -- A Malaysian court has fined a man and a woman four buffaloes and a pig after they were found guilty of an extra-marital affair, a local report says. The pair were convicted by the Native Court in Penampang on Borneo island.
