WEB BOHEMIAN Weekend Edition (Saturday/Sunday, January 9-10, 2010)
(1)- ZOMBIE STUFF -- Perhaps the zombie has achieved greater cultural resonance as the world has become more crowded. Filmic depictions often involve a small group of individuals under siege from the undead or fleeing a flesh-eating mob. And now..
(2)- GLADWELL'S STICKY ISSUES -- It was the epitome of a Gladwellian idea: counterintuitive, startling, yet immediately graspable. In other words, sticky -- the supreme attribute for a successful meme.
(3)- WHO IS HE REALLY? -- Everyone knows who Colin Firth is. He’s Mr Darcy. He’ll always be Mr Darcy, despite the gaggle of not-Firths who’ve attempted the part in the years since Andrew Davies’s dripping adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice”.
(4)- WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT?? -- We are living in a world of increasing randomness. Competing versions of the truth, whether from YouTube, the blogosphere or the million-channel universe, cause people to become more polarized in their positions.
(5)- IN IRELAND -- Blasphemy is now a crime in Ireland, punishable by a €25,000 fine. The new law defines blasphemy as publishing or uttering matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion.
(6)- SAFE HOSPITALS -- Twenty-five years ago, Norwegians were also losing their lives to this bacteria. But Norway's public health system fought back with an aggressive program that made it the most infection-free country in the world.
(7)- HISTORY -- 225 years ago the first issue of a newspaper later renamed The Times appeared in London. It became the world's most famous newspaper and a journal with the longest record of continuous daily publication in the English language.
(8)- SURVIVALISM LITE - They call themselves 'preppers.' They are regular people with homes and families. But like the survivalists that came before them, they're preparing for the worst.
(9)- TOOK EVERYTHING -- At least three masked men broke into a home on Chicago's South Side early today, made 11 people inside remove their pants, shot one man and fled with the pants, their contents and televisions.
