(1)- INDONESIA AND ISLAM -- Islam was a relatively recent import to southeast asia. It washed up on western tip of Indonesia in the 12th century, took root in the 15th, and became dominant across much of the archipelago as late as the 17th.

(3)- PASSING NOTED -- Miep Gies, who died on January 11 aged 100, was one of a Dutch couple who hid and sustained the family of Anne Frank for more than two years in an Amsterdam attic; later she helped to save Anne Frank's diary for posterity.
(4)- JOURNALISTIC RECOLLECTION -- Harold Evans published a memoir called “Good Times, Bad Times,” which told about the 14 years he was editor of the London Sunday Times, and about losing his job after Rupert Murdoch bought the paper.
(5)- MAPPLETHORPE -- More than 40 years after she first moved to the city, Patti Smith recounts those years, and in particular her relationship with the provocative photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, in a new book called Just Kids.
(6)- TOP MOVIE MOMENTS -- Scriptwriting isn't easy. Some people spend months trying to perfect a specific scene, trying to write that line that sticks in the mind of those who hear it. Then these guys come along and do it on their own...
(7)- BYE, BYE -- Are brick-and-mortar bookstores doomed? People predicted the downfall of physical bookstores for quite some time, but with stores vanishing and shelf selections getting much worse, the warnings have gotten more dire lately.
(8)- TELLING ON MOM – Lawton Oklahoma police praised an 11-year-old boy after he called 911 to report his mom and her boyfriend were dealing drugs from their home.
Police claim the boy had planned on turning his mom and her boyfriend in for the past few months.
(9)- HAZARDS – As well as terrorism, flight delays, security lines, bagged liquids, weight limits and baggage fees, now come midflight pickpockets. Two high-profile cases in recent days are raising awareness to the issue.
